About two months ago, Bar Sótano made its grand debut in the lower level of Frontera with renowned chef Rick Bayless at the helm. He has a long history of creating exceptional Mexican cuisine with a contemporary twist, which is exactly what you’ll find at this new bar and restaurant in River North.

Bar Sótano captures the complex flavors of Mexico in every dish, cocktail, and pour of mezcal. Stop by after work to try the signature El Sótano, a cocktail that features the house’s own mezcal, plus Green Chartreuse, fresh sugar cane, and a splash of lime juice. Enjoy it on the side of oysters on the half-shell or fresh ceviche teeming with albacore tuna, tomato, olives, serrano peppers, cilantro, toasted sesame seeds, and Sotol liquor. You can also snack on artisan popcorn or Oaxacan peanuts, or share a few small plates such as Yucatan fire-fried chicken and roasted vegetables with mole. Bar Sótano also dishes out larger plates such as tostadas, tacos, and even a fusion burger.
